What is NATIVA™ wool, and why does the blockchain make your socks honest?
Sustainable, green, ecological… These are terms you now find on almost every clothing label. But what do they actually mean? At Merino Love we believe 'sustainability' should not be a marketing slogan, but a firm promise you can verify. That is why we work exclusively with NATIVA™-certified wool.
In this post we take you on a journey to the origin of your favourite socks. From the wide grasslands of Uruguay to your own feet.
What is NATIVA™?
NATIVA™ is not just any certification; it is a global standard for pure, responsible wool. If a farm wants to carry the NATIVA™ mark, it has to meet extremely strict requirements. Those requirements rest on three important pillars:
-
Animal welfare: The sheep live freely and stress-free on vast natural pastures. The wool is of course 100% mulesing-free (a painful procedure that is thankfully strictly forbidden under this certification). The sheep are sheared calmly and respectfully by certified professionals.
-
Land management: The farmers protect local biodiversity. They make sure the soil is not exhausted by overgrazing and restore natural ecosystems.
-
Social responsibility: Everyone in the chain – from the shepherds on the farm to the workers in the spinning mill – works in safe conditions and receives a fair wage.
The power of the blockchain: traceable to the individual sheep
But how can you be sure that the wool in your sock really does come from such a certified farm? That is where technology helps us. NATIVA™ uses blockchain technology.
Think of it as a digital, tamper-proof logbook. At every step the wool takes – from shearing in Uruguay, to spinning the yarn, to knitting the sock in our factory – a digital fingerprint is left behind. Nobody can fiddle with the data. That is how we can say with 100% certainty which flock the wool in your specific pair of socks came from.
Why we choose this
Let us be honest: this way of working costs more time, energy and money. But for us there is no other option. We want to make a product that not only feels fantastic, but genuinely does good for the world. No secrets, no vague claims. Just an honest, transparent chain everyone can be proud of.
So next time you pull on your Merino Love socks, you know exactly what you are wearing. A good feeling, isn't it?
